Learning Mathematics by Imitation or Creation?
Abstract: It is well known from mathematics education research since at least 30 years that for task and teaching design, a key to broaden and deepen students' mathematical competence is that students engage in non-routine problem solving (i.e. creation of task solutions that are not already known to the student). However, many of the commonly implemented designs are still based on students' imitation of provided task solution mehtods, which leads to quick but narrow and superficial learning. Experiments comparing effects from learning from imitative and creative taks designs will be presented, and also ongoing studies concerning how teaching may support students' creative reasoning.
